By the way, clicking around online I see that there is an exhibition of Mary Newcomb's drawings and paintings at the Crane Kalman Gallery in Knightsbridge right now, until May 5th!! There's a record of what they're showing in the catalogue, also online.
I was gripped! I found a play by Alan Plater on YOUTUBE about his time on Jura - the picture quality isn't great but it is still interesting and worth watching.
Thank you for this beautiful post about Mary Newcomb. I am now a fan of her's. Reading your article I was joyful & tearful at the same time. Adore the Sheep paintings. Also Iive in Suffolk & so nice to know she lived here too.
What a wonderful post! Another introduction to a woman painter that I had not met before. I love those sheep paintings–especially The Masham– and the dandelion clock with its words about time passing, so clever. Thank you!
After a dreadful week - lost my beloved whippet on Monday and still reeling- how joyous to discover the Mary Newcomb paintings, and Sonder! Thank you 🩷
I also very much appreciated the Clemency Burton-Hill programme. It’s rare for anything on television to capture my attention these days, but this did.
Thank you so much Deborah, how lovely to discover a new (to me) artist, via you! Magnificent paintings, I particularly loved the goldfinches and the star-watching ewes!
I think her work magical. The star gazing sheep are my favourite too, partly because of their simplicity and partly because I love the idea of them wishing on a shooting star.

Good to hear about this, Penny!
I loved this, am new to Mary Newcomb and now want to find out more about her. Thank you for introducing me to this new lovely thing.
I am so pleased you have discovered her! The monograph of her work is beautiful, as is the book of her drawings. Enjoy!
I will definitely do so. I am a very amateur painter myself, so I'm fascinated to see how she developed her work, colours, notes, everything.
I really love those sheep paintings. So sweet
I listened to you first, then wandered through the pictures. What a glorious and yet gentle beginning to the day. Thank you.
Thank you very much. I am always nervous recording, it takes several goes and in the end I just press ‘go’! Her pictures are so lovely, aren’t they?
They are indeed…quite magical. As for your recordings, may I say that the occasional rustle of paper as a page is turned is particularly endearing !
Professional to the last!😂 The sound of a bus going by must have been another highlight!
😉
What a delightful read and stunning paintings loved them all x
Thank you, Jo! Her work is a delight, isn't it?
I’ve just started listening to The Jura Affair. Thank you for the recommendation.

She is a balm to the soul, isn't she? Thank you for reading it. I am just finishing another Suffolk based post, but this is very different!
I love Mary Newcomb’s work …she’s quite the best in contemporary art today in my view x
I completely agree!

I find her so cheering. I love her Masham who looks so noble!

Thank you for a fabulous look at this artist. The sheep are gorgeous. 👍🐏
Aren't they? You can tell she kept sheep, I think.
Those sheep! A really lovely read - and balm to the soul to look at such beautiful work. Thank you Deborah.
Aren't they marvellous? She captures their personalities so well. I love to think of them star watching. Thank you very much.
I also very much appreciated the Clemency Burton-Hill programme. It’s rare for anything on television to capture my attention these days, but this did.
Her courage and determination is extraordinary. I was so moved by it and am glad you thought the same.
